DVD Review: The Old Boys – Roddy Piper, Jake The Snake & Bret Hart Tell All In All Star Lineup
By Sumit Rehal
No matter what year you first saw your favourite wrestlers lock arms on your TV screen, there is no denying that the biggest names in wrestling were at their peak in the 80s and 90s
A culture of road trips, late night parties and one-upmanship was rife during the ‘Golden’ and ‘New Generation’ eras of professional wrestling and “The Old Boys” documentary impeccably sets the scene of what life was like in this time.
There is a tasty lineup of legends giving exclusive interviews ranging from the cream of the crop in The Million Dollar Man, Ted Dibiase talking about his new life as a minister all the way down to his former servant, Virgil telling his secrets on how to run a successful convention stall! The likes of Scott Hall and Jake the Snake recall their time in the ring during WWF’s most prolific era. With the two in the headlines over the last few years for their recent hardships, it’s refreshing to see them tell tales of their glory days while looking fresher than ever on camera.
Even though this movie covers all the triumphs of the featured superstars, there is no holds barred with the interviewer getting the thoughts on the hardest times in wrestling such as The British Bulldog and Owen Hart’s untimely death. Bret Hart shares his thoughts on his family’s demises, along with Bulldog’s wife, Diana Hart and daughter, Georgia Smith. The segment however manages to finish on high with rare & exclusive footage of Davey Boy Smith’s, along with a very amusing prank call from Owen Hart, reminding us of his unique sense of humour.
Speaking of humour, The Iron Sheikh is full of classic one liners throughout the whole video with rants about Hulk Hogan and the rest of his long term rivals. Sheikhy’s rambles alone are enough to watch this over again!
The Old Boys releases on 20th June and is a must watch for any wrestling fan. You may think you know it all about the backgrounds of old school wrestling but you’d be left stunned with what these wrestlers have gone through in their careers after seeing this documentary. The roster includes Jake Roberts, Roddy Piper, Ted Dibiase, Scott Hall, The Iron Sheik, Terry Funk, Dynamite Kid, Animal, HonkyTonk Man, Marty Jannetty, Raven, Billy Gunn, Tatanka, Brutus Beefcake, The Road Dogg, Bret Hart, Jacques Rougeau, Bob Holly, Paul Roma, Demolition Ax & Smash, Lanny Poffo, Jimmy Powers, Pierre Oullet and many more.
