An Open Letter To Store Owners

By Caellin Rodgers

Spread The Word

Dear Store Owner,

We need to sit down and have a chat about the playlist in your store.

I know, as long as there IS music, you think, it doesn’t matter
To you
As long as there’s music, the customer will be happy
It’s all just background noise anyway
Fills the space
Empties the awkwardness
But customers aren’t here for very long, so what is the point
What is the point in making a playlist
That’s longer than two hours
That’s long enough
Fills the space
Empties the awkwardness

You know who is here for longer than two hours?
All of your employees.
As long as there IS music, you think, it doesn’t matter
To you.
Well, ma’am, sir, it does matter.
To me and all the other workers that are here
Every day
For eight hours

Let’s sit down and have a chat about top 40.
As long as there IS music, some of you think, it doesn’t matter.
We’ll come back to those of you that care a little more than this,
Those that have an aesthetic – but for the rest of you,
Sit down
Buckle up
Fact: Top 40 music is meant to be disposable.
Cheap, fun, and temporary, like the one-night-stand you hooked up with last weekend
DO NOT REUSE
Should be printed on top 40 playlists. Like a condom
You enjoy it for a short amount of time and then you throw it out and move on
This also means top 40 songs you don’t like
Age faster
By the second play through they ache
Nibbling at the grey matter

As long as there is music, you think, it doesn’t matter.
Fills the space
Empties the awkwardness
When your playlist is two hours long
Every song is four times
Daily
For the entire six months or longer
That your playlist “doesn’t matter”

It matters.

For the rest of you, the aesthetics:
Well done, you have picked songs that are more likely to grow with familiarity
Than to annoy
But your playlist is still less than a shift
And I guarantee all of us hate at least one song
Over and
Over and
Over
It’s a form of torture in the army, don’t you know.

As long as there IS music, you think, it doesn’t matter
To you
As long as there’s music, the customer will be happy
It’s all just background noise anyway
Fills the space
Empties the awkwardness
Well, ma’am, sir, it does matter, please think of your staff
Fills our space
Empties our patience
It does matter
To us.
